Inactive tool elements
For elements that are not directly involved in the forming or trimming operation, e.g. punch holders, die holders, backing plates and fixtures.
In those applications the requirements are not as high as for the active parts but the steels should have a combination of good machinability and enough strength to support the active parts in the tool. Tool steels meant for inactive tool elements can in some cases also be used for active tool parts when the requirements are low as for simple bending dies in short production runs.
